The Battle of the Kings

Overview

The Battle of the Kings is the annual second-year tournament at the School of Knowledge for Gifted Children. It uses one-on-one matches to determine the strongest eligible student and to test how the winners handle authority. The champion receives the title of King for the following year; the next two students receive the lesser titles of Queen and Jack. The authority is not formally enforced, but it extends over lower-ranking students and some staff, and it ends as the titleholder approaches graduation.

In Volume I, the tournament becomes more than a school tradition. Ryuji Sato’s entry challenges the social order that protects noble students, Riki Shibatani’s intimidation narrows the field, and the final titles place Ryuji, Sawano Torafuku, and Yuki Hayami in a new public alliance.

Tournament format and field

Competitors may use magic, martial arts, or swordsmanship. A match ends when one fighter yields or cannot continue. In the Volume I tournament, Riki Shibatani had intimidated enough students that only eight registered. His arrangement with Nori Morita also gave him an opening-round victory when Nori yielded immediately; Professor Tomo recognized the manipulation as cowardly but not illegal.

The field included Ryuji Sato, Sawano Torafuku, Riki, Nori, Yuki Hayami, Sophia Dion, Ali Hamza, and Taichi Suzuki. Elian Stewart, the headmaster, and the school staff presided over an arena protected from the spectators by a barrier.

Ryuji and Riki

In the semi-final, Riki faced Ryuji seeking revenge and entered with lethal intent. Ryuji answered Riki’s attacks with shadow puppets, trapped him, and continued the intimidation after Riki repeatedly yielded. Ryuji later explained that he wanted to make Riki too frightened to challenge him again. The spectators’ enthusiasm turned to alarm; Yuki Hayami challenged the method even while remaining Ryuji’s ally.

Final and titles

The final brings Ryuji and Sawano together after the tournament has already made each a central figure in the school. Sawano answers his shadow-based fighting with compressed fire, while Ryuji uses mobility and timing to continue the exchange despite the damage he has taken. Both combatants are injured in their final attacks; Sawano falls first, leaving Ryuji as champion. The result matters because it gives authority to a student who has openly rejected the noble hierarchy and to two allies whose own positions complicate any simple division between noble and commoner.

The final placed Ryuji against Sawano. Both were left badly injured in a mutual finishing exchange: Sawano used a compressed flame attack, and Ryuji answered from above with a knee strike. Sawano fell first, leaving Ryuji the winner. After the tournament, Ryuji became King, Sawano became Queen, and Yuki was granted Jack after debate. The titles gave the three students a new public position within the school, but the result also sharpened attention on Ryuji’s methods and origin.
