Yuki Hayami

Overview

Yuki Hayami is the son of hero and royal guard Reiko Hayami, a student of the School of Knowledge for Gifted Children, and Ryuji’s first true friend. He has short blond hair, wears a knight’s uniform, carries a rapier, and fights with inherited ice magic. Unlike many students, Yuki states that he judges people by strength rather than status, which allows him to meet Ryuji without demanding submission.

Yuki explains the Battle of the Kings to Ryuji and advances through it by defeating Ali. In the semi-finals he fights his childhood friend Sawano, who remains unbeaten against him, but takes the title of Jack after the tournament. When Ryuji’s treatment of Riki crosses a line, Yuki confronts him in fear rather than abandoning him. In His Return, he raises his blade against Shun and refuses to surrender Ryuji to the Lord of the Tower.

Connections

Yuki’s friendships with Ryuji and Sawano bind the King, Queen, and Jack together. His relationship with Reiko also places him between the school generation and the heroes who arrive to confront Shun.

Rescue expedition

Yuki joins Sawano's expedition without treating it as a ceremonial duty of the school Jack. In the Dark Forest he fights with a rapier and the blue-tinged speed associated with his family, cutting through goblins while remaining attentive to the people beside him. His presence also reveals the depth of his childhood friendship with Sawano: their familiarity predates Ryuji, but both now choose the same dangerous road for their missing friend.

The journey brings Yuki under the direct guidance of his father, Reiko Hayami. Reiko explains that monsters read mana instinctively and that the overwhelming aura above them is the reason forest creatures avoid the Tower. Yuki therefore approaches the summit knowing that the greatest threat is not the goblin camp they defeated, but the household holding Ryuji.
