Description
Nineteen years ago, two women fled up a mountain in a storm with assassins at their backs. One of them was the rightful Queen of Hikari. The other was her royal knight, who traded her own life to a demon to keep her lady breathing.
What happened inside the Tower over the following six months is not in any history. A duel in the courtyard that shattered both barriers. A flute carved from a broken branch. A queen who decided the only way to repay her shield was to leave it behind.

Shun Sato
Shun Sato is the Lord of the Tower, known to the public as the Devil of the Tower and remembered as the third hero of the Demon War. Accounts of him divide sharply: some describe a kind, charismatic young man; others a devilishly cunning monster. He is the father of Ryuji Sato and Mimi Sato, served at the Tower by Zero.
Ryuji Sato
Ryuji Sato enters Volume I as a seventeen-year-old newcomer to the School of Knowledge for Gifted Children. He presents himself as a commoner of no notable house, despite the black-and-red suit, long black hair tipped red, and exceptional composure that initially cause the students to assume he is a foreign prince. That claimed status makes him an immediate target in a school where noble students routinely treat commoners as property. It also places him at the centre of the year's Battle of the Kings.
Yumi Raijin
Yumi Raijin is Satomi Hikari's Royal Knight, protector, and chosen companion. She is a disciplined dual-blade swordswoman whose katana-and-wakizashi style uses lightning-fast movement associated with the Raijin Family. Her loyalty is personal as well as sworn: when assassins drive Satomi toward the Tower, Yumi offers her own life and service to secure the queen's treatment.
Mimi Sato
Mimi Sato is identified in Volume I as Shun Sato's eldest daughter and Ryuji Sato's sister. She belongs to the Tower household and calls Zero “Uncle,” placing her within the private family world from which Ryuji has been absent.
Haruka Sato
Haruka Sato is a daughter of the Tower household and Ryuji's sister. Through Chapter 17, the story presents her principally within the family's private space rather than through the political legend surrounding her father.
Zero
The elderly butler of the Tower, known to human legend as the Harbinger of Ill Omens.
Suzu
Suzu is one of Shun's shadow-bound servants and a member of the Tower household. Her brief appearance after the rescue party's forced entrance shows both extraordinary restorative power and an irreverent working relationship with the Lord of the Tower.
Roku
A towering member of the Tower household who emerges from Shun's shadow, charged with guarding the portal beneath the Tower.
Ryosuke
A monster that lives in the Lord's shadow — a cannibal swordsman quicker than sound, released only when Shun wants someone to suffer a fate worse than death.
Magnus
Magnus is the Demon King of the Demon Realm and the sovereign under whom demonkind is unified. By the time of Volume I, he has ruled for more than six centuries and lived for seven hundred and fifty years. He is protected by three royal knights, although the history presented in the prologue stresses that this protection is not necessary for a ruler described as ancient, powerful, brutal, and cunning.
Akiyama Magnus
Commander of the Royal Knights, the Golden Prince of all demons, and Heir to the Demon throne.
Satomi Hikari
Queen of Hikari, who hanged the nobles who betrayed her house and pardoned the soldiers who fought against her.
Arata Hikari
The usurper who seized the Hikari throne, killed at the Battle of a Thousand Shadows.
Yoshino Hikari
Yoshino Hikari is the warrior-king after whom the Kingdom of Hikari is named. He ruled the eastern nation and led its people to glory, establishing the swordsmanship traditions associated with the kingdom. He is the father of Satomi and Arata.
Kenji Osore
General Kenji Osore is a veteran commander who served the late Yoshino Hikari. After the Hikari succession conflict begins, he is the first major officer to stand with Satomi Hikari and rally troops to the rightful queen.
Takane Raijin
Yumi's mother, who taught the Raijin discipline to the usurper and kept her family neutral in the war that followed.
Kimiko Torafuku
Kimiko Torafuku is the Duchess of Chiseido, a hero of the Demon War, and the mother of Sawano Torafuku. She is associated with House Torafuku’s martial tradition and is described as an imposing battlemage in red silk robes, with the same orange hair as her daughter. The school’s tournament treats Sawano’s heritage as significant because Kimiko remains an undefeated hero.
Reiko Hayami
Reiko Hayami is a hero of the Demon War, the king’s royal guard, and the father of Yuki Hayami. Although his house began as minor nobility, it has grown influential through his reputation. Volume I presents Reiko as a knight whose standing is matched by the ice magic and discipline his son inherits.
Sawano Torafuku
Sawano Torafuku is the daughter of Kimiko Torafuku, the heir to the Tigress Martial Art, and a student of the School of Knowledge for Gifted Children. She enters the Battle of the Kings immediately, wearing no armour and fighting with the athletic confidence expected of her house. Her childhood friend Yuki Hayami has never defeated her in sparring.
Yuki Hayami
Yuki Hayami is the son of hero and royal guard Reiko Hayami, a student of the School of Knowledge for Gifted Children, and Ryuji’s first true friend. He has short blond hair, wears a knight’s uniform, carries a rapier, and fights with inherited ice magic. Unlike many students, Yuki states that he judges people by strength rather than status, which allows him to meet Ryuji without demanding submission.
