Kenji Osore

Overview

General Kenji Osore is a veteran commander who served the late Yoshino Hikari. After the Hikari succession conflict begins, he is the first major officer to stand with Satomi Hikari and rally troops to the rightful queen.

Arrival at the Tower

Kenji reaches the Tower during Satomi's six-month refuge and brings the military cause back into the sanctuary. He and Satomi work over maps, supply routes, recruitment, and the practical problem of returning to Hikari. His report eventually places twenty thousand loyalist soldiers at the forest's edge.

Service to Satomi

Kenji serves House Hikari as a general; he is not a blood member of the royal family. His loyalty connects Yoshino's reign to Satomi's claim and gives her the force necessary to leave the Tower by the end of Chapter 17.

Command in the field

Kenji rides at the head of the vanguard beside Satomi as the loyalist army marches through the realm toward Goguma. When the two hosts form up at dusk, he orders Lord Hasegawa to send forward his finest swordsman for the traditional pre-battle challenge, and he escorts Satomi from the vanguard to the safety of the rear command position once the engagement is about to begin.

From that position he refuses to let her look away from the fighting, telling her that a ruler cannot avert her eyes from those risking their lives for her cause. When assassins attack the command position moments later, he deflects the first thrown dagger, is unhorsed and wounded in multiple places by the volley that follows, and still places himself bodily between Satomi and more than a dozen hooded attackers, fighting on several fronts until his guard is broken.

Betrayal

At a signal from Arata Hikari, Kenji puts a dagger to Satomi's throat. He is weeping, his hand shaking, and he can only ask her forgiveness and say that he had no choice.

Arata reveals the terms: the general was made to choose between the lives of his wife and young child and the life of his princess. Arata also identifies him as the source of the intelligence that had let the usurper track the loyalist army so precisely, pointing out that no one had thought to ask how their general always knew where to find them. The betrayal therefore predates the battle and explains Arata's confidence in his own plan.

Death

Satomi ends the standoff herself, drawing a small dagger given to her by Yumi Raijin and driving it into Kenji's thigh. As his grip loosens, Yumi thrusts her katana through his throat. He drops his weapon and stumbles back, extending a bloodied, trembling hand toward his princess in a final appeal for forgiveness before collapsing dead on the field.

Kenji's existing article records his loyalty as the bridge between Yoshino's reign and Satomi's claim; the battle reframes that service as the vector by which the usurper reached her. His wife and child are established only through Arata's account of the coercion, and their fate is not disclosed.

His family

The coercion that produced Osore's betrayal was empty. After the battle, Satomi Hikari sends a squad of elite guards to free the wife and young child the usurper's faction had been holding, and they are found in a secluded estate already dead — killed well before the battle was fought.

Osore therefore betrayed his queen for hostages who could not have been returned. The discovery removes the last of Satomi's leniency and leads directly to her decree of public execution for the traitors.
