Mimi Sato

Overview

Mimi Sato is identified in Volume I as Shun Sato's eldest daughter and Ryuji Sato's sister. She belongs to the Tower household and calls Zero “Uncle,” placing her within the private family world from which Ryuji has been absent.

Her appearance comes during His Return, when Shun speaks of her while confronting Ryuji at the school. The volume does not yet provide a full account of Mimi’s history or her own actions. What it does establish is the existence of a family bond that complicates Ryuji’s claim to be an ordinary commoner and makes his forced return to the Tower a return to a household rather than merely a prison.

Connections

Mimi links Ryuji to Shun and Zero, and her brief introduction signals that the Tower contains relationships the school has not seen. Later details remain outside Volume I’s scope.

Healer and host during the refuge

When Satomi and Yumi arrive bleeding at the Tower, Mimi is twenty-four and already the household's healer. Her green magic closes Satomi's wounds before she treats Yumi, and she prepares adjacent rooms so the royal knight can remain near her queen. Mimi's welcome gives practical form to the sanctuary Shun reluctantly grants.

Six months later, Mimi helps Satomi leave without waking Yumi. She cannot meet Yumi's eyes when the knight begins to suspect the truth at breakfast. Her silence is not indifference: it shows the conflict between obedience to her father, compassion for Yumi, and the promise made to Satomi.

At the Battle of a Thousand Shadows

Mimi is summoned out of her father's shadow onto the battlefield and ordered to heal the wounded. She addresses Shun as "Father" and complies at once, closing the wound across Yumi Raijin's back, though Yumi stays unconscious from blood loss. Satomi Hikari thanks her; she does not answer. The narration attributes her silence to dread rather than coldness — she already knows the intervention will be paid for once the battle ends.

Shun then orders her to guard Satomi and Yumi rather than follow him. She begins to object and is cut off with a direct order, which she accepts unhappily.

The decision matters. After Ryosuke finishes killing Arata Hikari he turns on Satomi, and Mimi puts herself between them and orders him to stop. Ryosuke drops his grin and glares at her with real malice before laughing, claiming he was joking, and withdrawing. She watches him the entire time without lowering her guard. It is the first time she is shown facing down another member of her father's household.

The farewell

When Shun returns from the ball, Mimi is waiting in his study with tea ready and greets him warmly. She notices his pain immediately; the narration calls her his right hand, his shadow. He embraces her and apologises, and then summons Ryosuke, who knocks her unconscious with the pommel of his sword before she understands what is happening. Her last word as she falls is a broken attempt at “Father.” Ryosuke carries her to her room on Shun's orders.

Shun's intention is protective: the narration states that he was saving her, and breaking her heart in doing so. His final orders at the portal make it explicit. If he does not return within a week, Roku is to take Mimi as far from the Tower as he can, and protect and care for her as if she were Shun himself.
