Satomi Hikari

Overview

Satomi Hikari is the elder child of Yoshino Hikari and the rightful heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Hikari. After Yoshino dies, her younger brother Arata Hikari contests the succession and becomes the usurper. Satomi’s initial defeat forces her to flee with her royal knight while assassins pursue her.

Her flight ends at the Tower, where Shun’s butler admits her behind barriers she had seen from her childhood windows. Satomi remains there for six months rebuilding her army. She then returns to Hikari and nearly loses again until Shun intervenes in the Battle of a Thousand Shadows. Arata dies, Satomi regains the crown, and she executes the nobles who backed him within a week.

Connections

Satomi’s restoration is bound to Arata’s death, Yoshino’s legacy, and Shun’s treaty-breaking aid. The consequences of that intervention reach beyond Hikari, drawing the attention of Magnus.

The march on Goguma

Satomi leads twenty thousand soldiers out of the forest and through the outskirts of the realm under her father's black-bear banner, with General Kenji Osore riding beside her at the head of the vanguard. The sigil is recognised by the peasantry as the mark of the late Warrior-King, and the countryside responds to her march with a mixture of open celebration and anxious whispering. Hundreds of peasants abandon their fields to join her, swelling the host by a further thousand within a single day — untrained farmers with makeshift weapons whose loyalty is owed to the memory of Yoshino Hikari.

Command at the battle

Offered mercy in exchange for confessing treason and surrendering, Satomi refuses her brother's envoy publicly, swearing to reclaim her home and to fight to the last heartbeat of the last soldier standing. Her army's morale peaks in response, and not one of her soldiers accepts the accompanying offer of wealth and pardon for defection.

Withdrawn to the rear command position once the charge begins, she is unable at first to watch her own people killing one another and turns her eyes away. Osore instructs her that a ruler cannot look away from those dying for her cause, and she forces herself to keep watching.

The order of execution

Confronted with Arata Hikari's intention to purge his own nobles, erase the Raijin family, and force Chiseido back into submission, Satomi recognises that the brother she raised is gone. She recalls the child who had looked up to her, whose brow she had wiped after training and whose hand she had held in the castle corridors, and concludes that greed has hollowed him out entirely.

She accuses him of tarnishing their father's memory, insisting that Yoshino was never a conqueror and had only ever fought for peace, and then issues a formal command to Yumi Raijin to execute him — sentencing, in her own words, not her brother but the madman he has become. She delivers the order in tears and with full royal authority.

Hostage and rescue

Taken hostage by Osore at Arata's signal, Satomi orders Yumi not to falter or surrender even with a blade at her throat. When her knight begins to lower her weapon, Satomi breaks the standoff herself by drawing a small dagger — a gift from Yumi that she had kept hidden against her chest for years — and driving it into the general's thigh, creating the opening that allows Yumi to kill him.

When Arata cuts Yumi down from behind, Satomi catches her falling knight, pulls her against her chest, and then throws her own body over the unconscious woman to shield her from the killing stroke. The blow is intercepted by Shun Sato, whose arrival she registers with disbelief as the chapter closes.

Victory and accession

Satomi survives the battle because Shun arrives before Arata's final stroke lands, and she spends the remainder of the engagement holding the unconscious Yumi while Mimi guards them both. Her one contribution to the fighting is a warning: she shouts to Shun that Arata trained under Takane Raijin and knows the Raijin style's secrets.

Watching her brother eaten alive by Ryosuke breaks something in her. She is physically sick on the field, and the narration marks this as the moment she understands what the Lord of the Tower actually is — that the courtesy and the helping hand concealed a monster. Arata was also the last of her bloodline, so the victory and the bereavement arrive together.

She is queen from the end of the battle. Her army marches on Goguma and finds the gates barred by the nobility, but the garrison — worn down by months of the nobles' abuse in her absence — sends a messenger out by night promising to open the city at noon. The gates open as promised, and every noble who abandoned the royal family is hunted through the noble quarter and detained before sunset.

Her last illusion is removed when the squad she sends to free Kenji Osore's family finds his wife and young child already murdered. She responds by decreeing a public execution for every traitor who betrayed her bloodline.

The public execution

Within days of the capital's fall, massive wooden gallows are erected in the heart of Goguma's central plaza. The captured nobles are stripped of their silks, dressed in rags, chained, and paraded through the streets, where the citizens they had abused pelt them with rocks, rotten fruit and curses. A masked executioner — a towering figure with his face concealed beneath black cloth and his eyes burning with silent vengeance — waits on the platform.

Satomi takes the centre of the gallows to address her people, ignoring the nobles weeping behind her. She tells the square that the men behind her showed the city no mercy and that today the favour is returned, and that this is the day the last embers of tyranny are extinguished. She gives the executioner a single nod; the trapdoors open, and the traitors are hanged together.

The pardon and the new era

Her second declaration is the one that surprises the crowd: that this shall be the final Hikari blood spilled in this land. Challenged from the plaza by an elderly peasant who demands to know what will become of the captured enemy soldiers who killed their sons, Satomi answers without hesitation that they were merely blades wielded by snakes. She grants them all a royal pardon on the condition that they spend the remainder of their days rebuilding the realm, and names that labour as how they will pay for their crimes.

She closes by framing her reign against her father's: too much Hikari blood has been squandered in a senseless conflict, and the time has come to heal, to rise above the ashes of war, and to build the lasting peace Yoshino Hikari devoted his life to protecting. The distinction between the execution of the nobles and the pardon of their soldiers is the first governing act of her reign.

The invitation and the ball

Satomi declares the following week a national holiday — a period for the kingdom to celebrate its victory, honour its fallen, and welcome a new era — and dispatches a royal emissary to the Tower bearing a personal invitation to Shun Sato for a grand royal ball. The embassy is turned back at the treeline by Zero, who refuses it passage but agrees to carry the letter himself because it comes from Satomi.

The ball fills the castle's Great Hall with local and foreign nobility. Satomi and Yumi Raijin are the centre of it, surrounded by courtiers seeking favour with the newly anointed queen, whose predatory nature the narration notes both women recognise and answer with polite smiles. Satomi's own reaction to Shun's attendance, and to her knight leaving the receiving line to dance with him, is not recorded at this boundary.

The blessing

When Shun vanishes from the ball, Satomi is watching from the sidelines. The narration states that no one knew the horrors Shun was capable of as she did, having witnessed them firsthand, and that she was reluctant to release her dearest friend to him. She smiles regardless, and gives Yumi Raijin a gentle nod — her blessing and approval — which frees Yumi to leave her post and ride after him.
