The School for Gifted Children

The academy community

The School for Gifted Children is the faculty and student body of the School of Knowledge for Gifted Children in Kenmeikyo. It is distinct from the buildings: it is the community of teachers, noble heirs, common-born students, and rules that give the institution its social force. Within it, prestige and learning coexist with a hierarchy that makes some children appear entitled to command others.

Battle of the Kings

Its defining annual institution is the Battle of the Kings. Second-year students fight until an opponent yields or can no longer continue. The winner becomes King and holds broad authority over the student body for a year; the next two become Queen and Jack with diminishing authority, and a King cannot compete again in the third year. The contest exists to reveal how future leaders use power, not to guarantee that they use it well.

Volume I transformation

Under Elian Stewart and alongside Professor Tomo, the community receives Ryuji, Sawano, Yuki, Michika Midori, Taichi Suzuki, Chiyo Minamoto, and Ali Hamza. Ryuji’s win makes him King, Sawano Queen, and Yuki Jack. Their new titles do not end the academy’s conflict, but they change who has the authority to confront it.
