Professor Tomo

Overview

Professor Tomo is a faculty member at the School of Knowledge for Gifted Children and the teacher responsible for Ryuji’s class. From the start, he opposes Ryuji’s admission, warning Elian Stewart that the new commoner will bring trouble. Elian overrules him, and Tomo is forced to encounter Ryuji first in the corridor and then at the back of his own classroom.

Tomo’s conduct is openly provocative. He praises Ryuji’s knowledge while framing it as exceptional “for a commoner,” then presses him with questions on Rapid Aging. At the Battle of the Kings he acts as announcer and referee, recognising Riki’s bracket scheme but accepting it as technically legal. He is horrified by Ryuji’s treatment of Riki and repeatedly loses composure at the tournament’s extremes, but remains at his post through the crisis.

Connections

Tomo’s relationship with Elian is defined by institutional disagreement; his relationship with Ryuji is defined by suspicion that becomes fear. His refereeing also puts him at the centre of the matches involving Taichi, Riki, Nori, Yuki, Ali, Sawano, and Sophia.
