Volume I boundary
The Dark Forest of Eterna lies at the base of the Eterna Mountains and belongs to the dangerous frontier surrounding the Tower. Volume I places it in Ryuji’s own account of the year before school: while working for the Adventurers’ Guild, he fought monsters in the dark forest and reached B-rank. The forest is therefore not decorative wilderness but the environment in which he learned to survive outside noble institutions.
Guild connection
The Adventurers’ Guild provides the practical structure through which Ryuji takes paid quests after defending villagers from bandits. His later decision to bring a hobgoblin commander’s head to the guild and seek promotion leads to his bet with the Guild Master, the chain of events that sends him to the School.
Position in Eterna
The forest’s connection to the mountains and the Tower places Ryuji’s private experience beside the continent’s treaty history. The Eterna Mountains are the disputed former land of Lindsey, while the Tower controls the Gate above. The forest remains a place where ordinary work, danger, and the consequences of that border meet.
The road taken by the rescue party
The forest lies on Chiseido's outskirts and is roughly three days from Kenmeikyo. Its monsters sustain dangerous but valuable Guild work for nearby communities. Goblins move in packs under stronger hobgoblins, and the rescue party must cut through their territory rather than follow a safe road to the Tower.
The forest's danger changes near the mountain. Reiko explains that its creatures can sense mana and instinctively refuse to climb toward the Tower. This makes the silence around the summit a warning: the absence of monsters does not mean safety, but the presence of something they fear more.
The warded threshold
Chapter 20 establishes that the forest boundary is itself a monitored line. When a royal emissary and his escort of four armoured knights step past the treeline on the outskirts of the kingdom, the lead guard's first footfall produces an eerie sensation of crossing an unseen threshold — the narration compares it to tripping an invisible wire that signals the intrusion — followed by a faint pulse of raw mana sweeping past the party like a cold breeze.
Nothing visible follows. The silence is itself the effect: the men glance back toward the open plains and begin to panic before Zero speaks from behind them, having arrived without being seen or heard. He turns the embassy back at the treeline, telling them the Tower is closed to all outsiders, and instructs them to leave the forest immediately. They flee the woods on foot.
The scene refines what the forest's reputation rests on. The soldiers know it as a place of nightmare and legend before they enter, and the reason the approach is impassable is not its monsters but the household watching its edge.
