The Morita Barony

A house built on service

The Morita Barony is a lesser Chiseido nobility that values protection and unwavering loyalty. Its defining relationship is hereditary service to House Shibatani. Volume I presents that loyalty not as a contract freely negotiated by the children involved, but as an inheritance passed down with the family name.

Nori Morita

Nori Morita has been assigned to protect Riki Shibatani since childhood. He tells Ryuji’s group that the obligation belongs to their families rather than to the two boys personally. His quiet observation of Riki’s cruelty and his eventual role in the schoolyard conflict show the strain created when duty to a house conflicts with the person one is asked to defend.

A question of loyalty

Nori’s water magic and strategic restraint make him an effective guardian, but they do not resolve the moral problem of inherited service. The Morita Barony’s place in Volume I is therefore more than a lineage note: it helps explain why a student can be bound to someone he resents, and why the school’s hierarchy survives through obligations that precede the people living under them.
