Capital of the Demon Continent

The Frontier is the largest city in the Demon Realm and, in the words of Chapter 21, the new capital of the Demon Continent. It is the first demon city the published story shows, and it is reached from the far side of the portal beneath the Tower: the stone hall that portal opens into ends in large stone doors, and those doors open directly onto the city.

Shun Sato recognises it immediately as a place he is all too familiar with. What he sees, though, is a transformation. The narration records that the land was once a deadly dark forest and a jagged mountain range, and is now a bustling city of unmatched elegance.

Walls and streets

The Frontier is described as a marvel of engineering, a sprawl of stone and iron stretching toward the horizon. Massive stone walls encircle it on a scale so immense they seem to touch the sky. The chapter adds that those who understand the place know the walls serve more as a cage than a guardian — designed to trap any human foolish enough to step into the demons' domain.

Its buildings rise with steep roofs and ornate stonework. Tall, slender windows and decorative iron railings line the streets, thin balconies jut out over the square, and between every set of buildings smaller streets and alleys snake like veins deeper into the city.

The straight road

From the base of the stone doors runs a single, perfectly straight thoroughfare that cuts through the heart of the capital, which the narration compares to a scar. At the far end of that line, dominating the horizon, stands the Demon Castle. The road is the only route the chapter shows through the city, and it leads nowhere but the castle.

The fallen lord's walk

Shun is marched down that thoroughfare in chains, at night, with Akiyama Magnus at the head of the escort. The main street stops as he passes: people drop their work to watch their own prince lead armoured men dragging the legend they revered as a hero.

The crowd does not speak with one voice. The chapter records four reactions — fear (“Who will protect us now that he's fallen?!”), contempt (“A deserved fate! That abomination had it coming from the start!”), opportunism (“Who do you think will become the next lord of the tower? Perhaps we might stand a chance…”), and loyalty (“He fought for us! Suffered for us! He sacrificed everything so that we might live! He does not deserve such cruelty!”). The narration frames the walk as one of shame through a river of poison, and states that the air grows thicker the closer Shun comes to the castle.
