The Demon Realm

A mirrored homeland

The Demon Realm is the homeland of demonkind and a realm mirrored against Kaladria. Volume I’s human historical account identifies it as the far side of the Gate, the portal whose appearance in Eterna began the long war. The two worlds are thus bound by a passage and by a peace neither side can casually disregard.

People and rule

Demons resemble humans in form but are identified by red eyes, uniquely shaped horns, and tails. Their lives commonly extend beyond three centuries, so memories of war and loss can span generations. During the events described in Volume I, Magnus is the Demon King, a ruler said to have held power for more than six centuries; his court is recorded as the Demon Court.

The treaty relationship

The Demon War ended in an arrangement that assigns the human-side Eterna range to demon authority and charges the guardian of the Tower with keeping the Gate secure. The realm’s interest in that arrangement explains why the Tower’s interventions in human politics are not merely local affairs. The punishment for the guardian’s conduct is understood to belong to Magnus’s authority.

The Frontier

Chapter 21 is the first chapter set inside the Demon Realm. Its capital is the Frontier, described as the largest city in the demon realm and the new capital of the Demon Continent, built where a deadly dark forest and a jagged mountain range once stood. Its massive walls are said to serve as a cage for any human foolish enough to enter, and at the end of its central road stands the Demon Castle.

The chapter also records how demons in the capital regard Shun Sato. Some revere him as the hero who fought and suffered for them; others call him an abomination and a half-ling. Shun himself reflects that he has been feared and hated wherever he went since childhood.
